Donkey cheese in the United States
An honest account of what can and cannot be done for buyers in the United States, from an importer based in Switzerland.
Why the United States
The United States is where most of our international enquiries come from, and it is also one of the harder destinations. Interest is driven by press coverage of the most expensive cheese in the world rather than by availability.
We will not ship speculatively into the United States. If you are set on it, the practical route is usually a licensed specialty importer already handling European cheese, and we are happy to speak to yours.
What the rules require
In broad terms, dairy products require the producing establishment to satisfy FDA requirements, with facility registration and prior notice of shipment; cheeses made from unpasteurised milk face additional ageing rules. We are importers, not your customs broker: treat this as orientation and verify with the authority or agent handling your consignment.
